The Government of India has begun implementing the third phase of the E‑Courts Mission Mode Project under the National e‑Governance Plan to strengthen digital infrastructure across the country’s judiciary.
The initiative aims to make the justice delivery system more accessible, affordable, transparent, and efficient by integrating advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into court processes.
AI integration in courts
As part of the project, ₹53.57 crore has been allocated for a special component titled “Future Technology Development.” This component focuses on exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) within the judicial system.
To guide the adoption of AI in courts, the Supreme Court of India has constituted an AI Committee responsible for evaluating, implementing, and monitoring AI-based tools in judicial functioning.
Collaboration with IIT Madras
The Supreme Court, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Madras, is currently testing AI and ML-based tools that aim to improve:
Document verification and deficiency detection
Metadata generation for court filings
Integration with the Integrated Case Management and Information System (ICMIS)
Electronic filing and case management processes
Key AI tools being introduced
Several AI-powered systems are being developed to support judges and court officials:
Legal Research Analysis Assistant
An AI-based tool designed to assist judges in legal research and document analysis, enabling quicker access to precedents and case references.
