NCC Girls’ Mountaineering Expedition Successfully Summits Mt Tenchenkhang
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) Girls’ Mountaineering Expedition 2019 to Mount Tenchenkhang was formally ‘flagged in’ by Rajeev Chopra, Director General NCC, on June 27, 2019.
The expedition team successfully summited Mt Tenchenkhang (6,010 metres) in West Sikkim, marking a significant milestone as the first-ever NCC girls’ expedition in the Sikkim Himalayas since 1970.
Expedition Details
The team was ‘flagged off’ on May 17, 2019, from the NCC Headquarters at RK Puram, New Delhi. The expedition was led by Madhab Boro, with Suman Lata as Deputy Leader. The contingent included 17 staff/GCIs and 20 girl cadets.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the team successfully reached the summit on June 12, 2019, bringing laurels to the NCC.
Recognition and Commendation
Lt Gen Rajeev Chopra commended the team’s determination and resilience, awarding certificates to the cadets for their achievement. He highlighted that expeditions of this nature play a crucial role in building confidence, leadership, and camaraderie among young cadets.
He also noted that Mt Tenchenkhang is classified as an ‘A Plus’ grade peak in terms of technical difficulty, making the successful summit even more commendable.
Felicitation in Sikkim
During their return journey, the team was felicitated in Gangtok by Ganga Prasad, Governor of Sikkim, who lauded the cadets for their remarkable achievement.
