Sustainability has long been a core value for Hindustan Zinc, and water conservation remains a key priority for the Udaipur-based company, particularly given Rajasthan’s status as one of India’s most water-stressed states.
Reaffirming its commitment to environmental stewardship, Hindustan Zinc announced a major water sustainability initiative on World Environment Day, pledging to revive Udaipur’s iconic Fatehsagar Lake. The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Urban Development Trust (UIT) and aims to deliver a long-term solution to the city’s water challenges.
Under the month-long initiative, 2–2.5 lakh cubic metres of silt will be removed from Fatehsagar Lake, significantly restoring its water-holding capacity while helping conserve local flora and fauna. The desilting process will deepen the lake and expand its effective catchment area, enabling it to capture and store more rainwater during the monsoon season and retain water for longer periods during years of weak rainfall.
Udaipur’s lakes have been under increasing ecological stress due to excessive discharge of untreated sewage, which has severely impacted water quality and surrounding ecosystems. To address this critical issue, Hindustan Zinc has already established Udaipur’s first Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with a capacity of 20 million litres per day (MLD). The company now plans to expand the total treatment capacity to 60 MLD, which will allow treatment of more than half of the sewage generated by the city.
Fatehsagar Lake is not only a major tourism attraction but also a vital source of drinking water for local residents. Declining water storage capacity had made urgent intervention essential to ensure the lake’s sustainable management and long-term viability. The current initiative, undertaken jointly with UIT, has already commenced and is scheduled for completion before the onset of the monsoon. An expert team has been engaged to ensure scientific execution and long-term water conservation outcomes for the city.
