Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, has emphasised the need for indigenous equipment to position India as a global leader in disaster response.
He was addressing the annual conference on capacity building of State Disaster Response Forces, held in consultation with Home Guards, Civil Defence, and Fire Services in New Delhi.
Push for Self-Reliance in Disaster Management
Shah assured the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Forces of full support from the Centre to strengthen and modernise their capabilities.
He urged the NDRF to collaborate with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop indigenous equipment within the next five years, aligning with India’s broader self-reliance goals.
Enhancing Expertise in Disaster Response
Highlighting India’s vulnerability to natural calamities, Shah stressed that the NDRF must continue to build specialised expertise and advanced response capabilities.
He noted that strengthening preparedness and technological capability is crucial for effective disaster management in a country frequently impacted by floods, earthquakes, cyclones, and other emergencies.
