India defeated the West Indies by five wickets in a high-scoring Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup, chasing down a stiff target of 196 with four balls to spare.
Batting first, the West Indies posted 195/4 in their 20 overs. Roston Chase led the effort with 40 off 25 balls, while Jason Holder remained unbeaten on 37 off 22 and Rovman Powell contributed 34 off 19 to power the innings in the death overs. India’s bowling attack kept things relatively controlled despite the late surge, with Jasprit Bumrah returning figures of 2/36 in four overs. Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakaravarthy chipped in with a wicket each.
In response, India finished at 199/5 in 19.2 overs. Sanju Samson anchored the chase with a commanding 97 off 50 deliveries, narrowly missing out on a century but setting up the platform for victory. Tilak Varma added a brisk 27 off 15 balls, while Suryakumar Yadav contributed 18 off 16 during the middle phase.
For the West Indies, Jason Holder impressed with the ball, picking up 2/38 in his four overs. Shamar Joseph claimed 2/42, and Akeal Hosein took 1/22, but their efforts were not enough to prevent India from sealing the win.
The result strengthens India’s position in the Super 8 stage, while the West Indies will need to regroup quickly to stay in contention.
