To enhance safety and ensure a seamless travel experience on national highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Jio to introduce a telecom-based safety warning system across the national highway network. Using Jio’s existing 4G and 5G network, travellers will receive advance warnings on their mobile phones when approaching identified high-risk locations such as accident-prone zones, stray-animal areas, fog-affected stretches, and sharp emergency curves.
The initiative aims to strengthen road safety by offering timely information to highway users, enabling them to adjust their driving behaviour and speed in advance. Alerts will be sent via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority phone calls. The system will be integrated in phases with NHAI’s digital platforms, including the ‘RajmargYatra’ mobile app and the emergency helpline number 1033.
This automated system will function for all Jio mobile users on or near national highways, providing warnings before entering potentially dangerous zones. The solution will use existing telecom towers, allowing rapid deployment. The strategic partnership leverages Jio’s digital infrastructure, which serves over 500 million customers across the country.
NHAI Chairperson Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav stated that this initiative is an important step towards offering timely and reliable information to travellers, enabling informed decisions and promoting safer driving practices. He expressed confidence that this will set a new benchmark in tech-enabled road safety management on national highways.
Reliance Jio President Shri Jyotindra Thacker said that the initiative utilizes the extensive reach of Jio’s telecom network to deliver large-scale, timely safety alerts—making highway travel safer and more informed.
The initial pilot deployment under select NHAI regional offices will help identify risk zones and define alert thresholds. The initiative will fully comply with all applicable regulatory provisions and data-security requirements.
NHAI will execute similar initiatives with other telecom service providers as well. By combining robust digital infrastructure with real-time communication tools, this effort will significantly enhance traveller awareness and help reduce preventable road accidents. NHAI remains committed to adopting innovative, comprehensive solutions that improve road safety across the country.
