Jaipur, March 13:
The Rajasthan government is preparing standard guidelines to strengthen Intensive Care Unit (ICU) services across hospitals in the state to ensure better treatment for critically ill patients and improved emergency care management.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting chaired by Gayatri Rathore, Principal Secretary of the Rajasthan Medical and Health Department. The consultation meeting was held through video conference with medical experts and hospital administrators to gather suggestions for the proposed guidelines.
Expert inputs for ICU guidelines
Gayatri Rathore said suggestions have been sought from:
specialist doctors from medical colleges
Chief Medical and Health Officers (CMHOs)
ICU in-charge doctors
Based on these recommendations, a detailed framework will be prepared and sent to the Central Government to develop standardized ICU service guidelines.
Focus areas for ICU strengthening
According to Dr Ravi Prakash Sharma, Director of Public Health, the guidelines will focus on improving several aspects of critical care, including:
infection prevention and control in ICUs
proper management of critically ill patients
availability of trained medical staff
improved monitoring systems
enhanced organ-support technologies
expanded emergency treatment capacity
Equipment and monitoring upgrades
The proposed framework will also emphasize the availability and proper functioning of critical equipment such as:
multi-parameter patient monitors
oxygen supply systems and suction facilities
IV pumps
ventilators
defibrillators
oxygen cylinders
These measures aim to ensure continuous monitoring and rapid response capabilities for ICU patients.
Participation from health institutions
The meeting was attended by senior officials and medical experts, including representatives from SMS Medical College and Hospital, officials from the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) program, members of the technical committee, ICU specialists from medical colleges, and representatives from Indian Medical Association as well as private hospitals.
