About the Display: WHAT REMAINS: Beneath the Surface
A city stripped bare. A painting scraped to its essence. A body returned to element. A hidden order finally seen. Four artists working with what remains once the surface gives way.
Every material carries a history it did not choose. Every image holds within it the residue of what it once was. Every pattern conceals a structure older than the eye that perceives it. What Remains brings together four Indian artists whose practices are built on this premise — that making and unmaking are the same gesture, and that what survives the process is where meaning lives. The presentation proposes that the most urgent contemporary art emerging from India today is not loud, decorative, or easily categorised. It is patient, material, and philosophically exact.
Together, these four artists practices propose a single argument: that the most consequential things are the ones that persist after the surface has been stripped, after the ceremony has ended, after the sound has faded, after the room has emptied of its unspoken tension. What remains is not absence. It is the thing itself, finally visible.
