Jain Group has launched a groundbreaking environmental initiative by developing a dense urban forest using the Miyawaki plantation technique, a first of its kind in Eastern India, to commemorate World Environment Day. Under this initiative, 1,00,000 saplings have been planted at the company’s flagship project, Dream Eco-City in Durgapur, with saplings provided by the West Bengal Forest Department. Plans are underway to implement this technique at select projects in Kolkata soon.
With rapid urbanization contributing to high pollution levels in Durgapur, Jain Group has chosen the innovative Miyawaki method—originating in Japan—to restore ecological balance by protecting water and soil quality. This technique accelerates forest growth up to ten times faster than conventional methods, significantly increases carbon dioxide absorption, and helps reduce noise and dust pollution. The resulting urban forest in Dream Eco-City will foster a rich, natural ecosystem within the cityscape.
“We have traditionally equated development with infrastructure and urban facilities such as roads, schools, and malls. However, this time we are addressing the pollution caused by urbanization. As the first real estate developer in Eastern India to adopt Miyawaki, we are proud to create a dense urban forest in Durgapur that will contribute meaningfully to ecological balance,” said Mr. Rishi Jain, Managing Director, Jain Group.
The Miyawaki technique requires minimal sunlight exposure on the ground and demands little maintenance, with no need for chemicals or artificial fertilizers, making it an ideal sustainable urban afforestation method.
