Indian stock markets are likely to open on a muted note on Monday, October 19, 2026, as weak global cues and elevated crude oil prices weigh on sentiment. GIFT Nifty was trading around 23,114.50, up 20 points or 0.09%, indicating a flat-to-positive start for the Nifty 50. Investors will track September-quarter earnings, movements in oil prices, foreign institutional investor (FII) activity and developments in global markets.
On Friday, October 16, the BSE Sensex gained 413.66 points, or 0.56%, to close at 74,729.27, while the Nifty 50 advanced 148.80 points, or 0.65%, to 23,146.15. Both benchmarks extended their gains for a second consecutive session and recorded weekly advances, with the Sensex rising 3.1% and the Nifty gaining 2.7%.
Wall Street Sell-Off, Asian Markets Decline
US markets ended Friday lower amid renewed pressure on artificial intelligence-linked technology stocks and concerns over rising oil prices. The S&P 500 fell 1.22% to 7,649.71, the Nasdaq Composite declined 2.19% to 26,128.13, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.55% to 51,891.77.
Asian equities also traded lower on Monday as investors assessed concerns over AI-related spending and a busy corporate earnings calendar. Japan’s Nikkei fell around 1% after declining 5.4% the previous week, while South Korean equities remained under pressure following steep recent losses.
China reported third-quarter GDP growth of 4.5%, slightly above market expectations of 4.4%. Industrial output rose 5.5% year on year in September.
HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank Q2 Results in Focus
Banking stocks are likely to remain in focus following the September-quarter results announced by HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.
HDFC Bank reported a 4.7% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to ₹19,510 crore. Net interest income rose 9.7% to ₹34,619.2 crore. Gross non-performing assets declined to 1.11% from 1.17% in the previous quarter, while net NPA fell to 0.37% from 0.41%.
ICICI Bank reported a 20.1% rise in standalone net profit to ₹14,843 crore. Net interest income increased 17.7% to ₹25,338.7 crore, while provisions and contingencies declined 6.9% to ₹850.7 crore. Gross NPA fell to 1.20% from 1.38%, and net NPA decreased to 0.30% from 0.35%.
Investors will also monitor Axis Bank and other companies reporting earnings as the Q2 FY27 results season progresses.
Nifty Technical Levels: 23,300 Resistance in Focus
Market analysts are watching the Nifty’s ability to sustain its recovery after two consecutive weeks of gains. The 23,300–23,320 zone is an important near-term resistance area, while the 22,980–23,000 range is seen as immediate support.
A sustained move above resistance could strengthen the recovery, while a break below support may trigger renewed selling pressure. With mixed international signals and a busy earnings calendar, volatility may remain elevated.
Crude Oil, Rupee and FII Activity
Crude oil prices remain a key variable for Indian markets. Brent crude futures slipped on Monday after reaching their highest level since May on Friday, while US West Texas Intermediate crude also declined. However, both benchmarks remained elevated amid concerns over energy supplies and geopolitical risks.
The rupee’s recent strength and foreign investor flows will also be monitored. Foreign institutional investors turned net buyers on October 16 after 15 consecutive sessions of net selling, purchasing equities worth approximately ₹1,166 crore, according to the supplied market update.
