London – May 2, 2026 Millions of private tenants across the United Kingdom gained landmark protections today as the Renters’ Rights Act officially entered into force. The legislation permanently bans Section 21 "no-fault" evictions, ending a practice that allowed landlords to repossess properties without stating a reason.
The law also introduces a "Decent Homes Standard" for the private sector and prohibits landlords from discriminating against families with children or those on benefits. While tenant unions celebrated the "end of an era of housing insecurity," some landlord groups warned the shift could lead to a shortage of rental stock as investors exit the market.
