AI Appreciation Day History: When and Why It Started
AI Appreciation Day is observed every year on July 16 to recognize the growing impact of artificial intelligence on society, business, education, and everyday life. The observance was launched in 2020 by technology author Tom Taulli and AI educator Pete Mack to encourage public understanding of AI and promote informed discussions about its opportunities and challenges.
The date was selected to coincide with a period when many technology conferences, research events, and innovation forums take place, making it an ideal time to bring together researchers, businesses, students, and policymakers.
Since its launch, AI Appreciation Day has evolved from a niche technology initiative into an internationally recognized occasion celebrated by universities, technology companies, startups, governments, and educational institutions.
"Working across EdTech, FinTech, and Culture Tech has shown us that AI's real value isn't in any single flashy output. It's in how it adapts to what each domain actually needs. In FinTech, that means precision and trust. In EdTech, personalisation at scale. In Culture Tech, sensitivity to context and community. What ties it together is treating AI as a collaborator rather than a shortcut. We've seen the best results when human expertise stays firmly in the loop. In which, a teacher shaping how a model explains a concept, a storyteller guiding how a tool interprets a tradition. AI doesn't replace that judgment. It simply gives it more room to work. At Adaptiv.Me, we believe the future of AI is about strengthening human expertise, making technology more meaningful, responsible, and valuable for the people who use it, while empowering people to create greater impact with confidence every day." said Geetanjali Shrivastava, Co-Founder & Educator, Adaptiv Me.
"AI's greatest value isn't in replacing creativity, it's in helping people create with greater insight, speed, and purpose. Working with brands across industries has shown us that, in branding and marketing. Its real strength lies in supporting teams with deeper insights, faster execution, and more meaningful customer experiences. The most effective campaigns still begin with human understanding, empathy, and strategic thinking. In which, AI helps to bring those ideas to life with greater precision and efficiency. Importantly, the strongest outcomes come when technology amplifies human creativity rather than competing with it. At BrandStory Digital, we believe that the future of AI is about empowering people to think bigger, create better, and build brands that connect with audiences in more authentic, responsible, and impactful ways." said Bala Kumaran, Founder & CEO, BrandStory Digital.
