Bangladesh's measles outbreak has intensified further, with the death toll from confirmed and suspected cases rising to 601 after seven more children died in the 24 hours ending June 3, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of the total fatalities, 511 are classified as suspected measles deaths, while 90 deaths have been laboratory-confirmed. Health authorities also reported 1,210 new suspected cases and 55 newly confirmed infections during the latest reporting period.
Since the outbreak escalated in mid-March, Bangladesh has recorded 74,572 suspected measles cases and 9,191 laboratory-confirmed infections. More than 60,000 suspected patients have been hospitalized since March 15, with 55,942 individuals recovering and being discharged after treatment.
Public health expert Dr. M. Mushtuq Husain cautioned that relying primarily on hospital-based treatment and intensive care would not significantly reduce mortality. He emphasized the importance of early patient isolation, timely oxygen support, and improved nutritional care to prevent severe outcomes.
