Incidents of ransom demands made through foreign phone numbers continue to surface in Haryana. In a fresh case reported from Panipat, a local businessman was allegedly threatened with a demand for ₹2.5 crore.
According to the police, Yashpal Garg, a resident of Sector 12, Panipat, received a call from a foreign number in which the caller demanded a ransom while issuing threats. The caller claimed to be associated with the Bambiha gang. Alarmed by the call, the businessman disconnected immediately. However, the accused allegedly continued to send threatening audio messages via WhatsApp thereafter.
The businessman subsequently lodged a complaint with the police. Acting on the complaint, the police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
DSP Satish Vats said that the phone number used to make the ransom call is being thoroughly examined. He cautioned that in many cases, individuals impersonate criminal gangs to extort money. He advised the public not to answer suspicious calls from unknown or foreign numbers and to immediately inform the police if such calls are received.
