September 8, 2026: Indian equity markets remained under pressure in early trade on Tuesday, with the latest market snapshot showing Nifty 50 futures at 23,776.90, up 90.80 points or 0.38%, and Nifty Bank futures at 57,250, up 134 points or 0.23%. However, key sectoral indicators remained weak, with Nifty Auto down 0.46% and Nifty IT down 0.73%.
The cautious market mood follows Monday's decline, when the Sensex fell 382.62 points, or 0.50%, to 76,132.81, while the Nifty 50 declined 118.55 points, or 0.50%, to 23,779.15.
Why is the Indian stock market under pressure?
The biggest concern for investors is the sharp rise in crude oil prices amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Brent crude was trading around $97 a barrel, increasing concerns for India because the country imports a large share of its crude requirements. Higher oil prices can increase India's import bill, put pressure on the rupee and raise inflationary concerns.
The geopolitical situation has also increased risk aversion across global markets. Concerns surrounding energy supplies and shipping through the Gulf region have added a risk premium to crude prices.
US interest-rate expectations are another pressure point. Stronger-than-expected US economic data has increased expectations of a possible Federal Reserve rate hike in September. Higher US rates can strengthen the dollar and reduce the attractiveness of emerging-market equities.
Indian IT stocks have been particularly vulnerable because a significant portion of their revenue comes from the US. Higher US rates and concerns over technology spending have therefore triggered selling in the sector. Infosys, for example, fell 3.81% on Monday, while other major IT stocks also declined.
