Kolkata, May 9, 2026:
Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister of West Bengal on Friday at a grand ceremony held at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.
R N Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new Chief Minister and his council of ministers.
The first BJP cabinet in the state includes Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Nisith Pramanik and Kshudiram Tudu, who also took oath as cabinet ministers.
Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh attended the ceremony along with several Union ministers and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states.
Before arriving at the venue, Narendra Modi held a roadshow in Kolkata. The Prime Minister and Suvendu Adhikari also paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary during the event.
The swearing-in marks a major political shift in West Bengal, where the BJP has formed the government in the state for the first time.
