The Department of Educational Studies, Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), in collaboration with the Centre for Training and Academic Guidance (CTAG) under the Human Welfare Foundation (HWF) yesterday inaugurated a three-day National Intensive Writers’ Clinic (NIWC) at the Conference Room of the School of Education Building. The clinic is aimed at equipping doctoral candidates and early-career researchers with the necessary academic writing skills, with a particular emphasis on APA 7th Edition guidelines. It is designed for a focused group of 30 participants to ensure personalized mentoring and meaningful and engaging peer interaction.
The workshop titled “A Hands-on Experience on Writing APA 7th Style Manuscripts” is part of the department’s broader initiative to promote scholarly excellence, publication ethics, and academic visibility. With a unique blend of theoretical insights and hands-on practical engagement, the clinic seeks to ensure that participants are not only familiar with APA conventions but are also confident in applying them in real-time writing scenarios.
The inaugural session began with a recitation of Qiraat by Mr. Taj Muhammed, an M.Ed. student. Dr. Quazi Ferdousi Islam, Associate Professor of the department, delivered the welcome address, highlighting the relevance of such workshops in demystifying academic writing for emerging scholars. Dr. Sameer Babu M, Associate Professor, offered the conceptual grounding for the event, emphasizing the need for immersive and practice-based learning environments in higher education. Dr. Sultana Parveen, Coordinator of CTAG, introduced the Centre’s mission of promoting educational access for marginalized communities. Prof. Sara Begum, Dean, Faculty of Education, extended her best wishes and a message of encouragement to participants and organizers alike.
Mr. Noufal PK, CEO of HWF, delivered a special address underscoring the importance of institutional and foundation-based support in democratizing access to research mentorship. Prof. Kaushal Kishore, Head of Department, presented the presidential remarks, calling upon scholars to treat academic writing as a rigorous and ethical practice integral to research excellence. Dr. Zeba Tabassum, Assistant Professor, provided an overview of the workshop schedule, and Mr. Vaibhav Verma, a Ph.D. scholar, concluded the session with a vote of thanks.
Over the course of three days, the workshop features expert-led sessions and hands-on activities, including editing exercises, reference list creation, and citation software use. Sessions are being conducted by prominent academicians such as Dr. Nabi Hasan from IIT Delhi, Dr. Balwant Singh Mehta from the Institute for Human Development, Dr. Jijo Varghese from the University of Delhi, and JMI’s own scholars, including Dr. Sajjad Ahmad, Dr. Khalid Raza, and Dr. Ghazi Shahnawaz. These sessions seek to cover a range of essential topics such as academic writing tools, publication ethics, literature review structuring, bias-free language, and citation practices.
The workshop, conducted in person to ensure active engagement, evaluates participants based on attendance, task completion, and performance in practical assessments. The organizing committee comprises senior faculty and scholars from DES, with Prof. Sara Begum, Prof. Kaushal Kishore, and Mr. Noufal PK serving as convenors, and Dr. Quazi Ferdousi Islam, Dr. Sameer Babu M, Dr. Zeba Tabassum, Dr. Sultana Parveen, and Mr. Vaibhav Verma leading the organizational efforts. A team of dedicated Ph.D. scholars manages various subcommittees responsible for logistics, documentation, media, and other key functions.
The workshop reflects the Faculty of Education and the Department of Educational Studies' ongoing commitment to nurturing high-quality, inclusive research training. Through initiatives like the NIWC, Jamia Millia Islamia continues to strengthen its vision of academic empowerment, equity, and excellence. The department aspires to make this writers’ clinic a recurring academic feature, supporting scholars nationwide in their pursuit of impactful and ethical research.
