Kolkata, India – May 2, 2026 : Repolling commenced at 7:00 AM today across 15 polling stations in West Bengal following reports of large-scale irregularities and voter intimidation during the initial phase of local body elections. The Election Commission of India (ECI) took the decision after reviewing complaints from opposition parties and reports from district observers.
Heavy security deployment, including central paramilitary forces, was observed at all 15 booths to prevent a recurrence of violence. Voting remained largely peaceful through the afternoon, with a recorded turnout of 52% by 3:00 PM. The ECI has also directed the suspension of three presiding officers for dereliction of duty during the previous round of voting.
