New Delhi: India is increasingly moving beyond its traditional role as a large technology market to emerge as a key architect of the global technology ecosystem. Through initiatives spanning 6G communications, semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence governance, and technology diplomacy, the country is building both domestic capabilities and international influence in strategic technologies.
At the forefront of this transformation is the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA), an industry-led and government-facilitated initiative launched in 2023. Bringing together telecom service providers, academia, research institutions, startups, and standards organizations, the alliance is focused on advancing indigenous 6G research and development. Its objective is to create a globally competitive communications ecosystem built around next-generation technologies such as multi-chip modules, system-on-chip architectures, and advanced Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
The alliance has established seven dedicated working groups covering spectrum management, technology development, applications, sustainability, use cases, and innovation pathways. Industry experts believe such collaborative frameworks are essential for ensuring that India plays a meaningful role in shaping future global telecommunications standards.
India's growing technology ambitions are also reflected in its expanding technology diplomacy efforts. The Ministry of External Affairs' New and Emerging Strategic Technologies (NEST) Division, established in 2020, has become a key institutional mechanism for addressing the foreign policy and international regulatory dimensions of emerging technologies, including 5G, 6G, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology, and clean technologies.
The division works closely with domestic stakeholders and international partners to strengthen global cooperation while ensuring India's voice is represented in evolving technology governance frameworks. Analysts view this as a critical step toward positioning India as both a technology innovator and a policy influencer.
The country's ambitions were further showcased at Semicon India 2025, where more than 350 exhibitors from 48 countries and regions participated. The event facilitated investment discussions, research collaborations, strategic partnerships, and workforce development initiatives across semiconductor design, fabrication, packaging, and manufacturing. The signing of 13 Memoranda of Understanding and participation from leading global semiconductor executives underscored growing international confidence in India's policy framework and long-term vision.
Artificial intelligence has emerged as another area where India is seeking global leadership. The India AI Impact Summit 2026 brought together representatives from more than 100 countries and 20 international organizations, attracting approximately 1.5 million participants through physical and virtual engagement.
A landmark outcome of the summit was the adoption of the India AI Impact Summit Declaration by 92 countries and organizations, signaling broad international support for India's vision of responsible, inclusive, and development-oriented AI. The summit also created pathways for more than US$200 billion in AI-related investment commitments while highlighting the country's expanding sovereign AI infrastructure.
Technology analysts note that these developments collectively represent a strategic shift in India's global positioning. Rather than merely adopting technologies developed elsewhere, India is increasingly contributing to the creation of standards, governance frameworks, research ecosystems, and innovation platforms that shape the future of technology worldwide.
As geopolitical competition increasingly revolves around technological capabilities, India's investments in 6G, semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and technology diplomacy are strengthening its position as a trusted global partner and an emerging leader in the next era of digital transformation.
