The number of dengue cases reported from Bangladesh this year has crossed 21,000. In the 24 hours preceding Friday morning, nearly 1,000 patients reported for dengue treatment in Dhaka.
According to the government, 14 deaths have occurred so far due to dengue, although actual figures may be higher based on reports from various parts of the country.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded that the government declare a public health emergency, stating that dengue has spread across the country. He also criticised the government for failing to control the outbreak.
The High Court directed the two city corporations in Dhaka to import effective insecticides to eliminate mosquitoes from the capital. The Dhaka City corporations said the insecticide would be imported within a day or two for testing before large-scale use.
The Director-General of DGHS, Professor Abul Kalam Azad, warned that the dengue outbreak may continue until September unless effective measures are taken immediately.
