New Delhi, February 11: In a major boost to India’s international crime enforcement efforts, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), working closely with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has successfully secured the return of wanted fugitive Sombir Motta from the United States through INTERPOL coordination.
Motta, who was wanted by Haryana Police in connection with serious offences including murder and illegal use of firearms, was deported to India on February 10, 2026. Upon arrival, he was immediately taken into custody by the Haryana Police to face legal proceedings.
The operation traces back to February 11, 2025, when the CBI, acting on Haryana Police’s request, got a Red Notice issued against Motta through INTERPOL. The agency then worked in close coordination with the National Central Bureau (NCB) in Washington to track, locate, and facilitate his deportation.
INTERPOL Red Notices are global alerts issued to law enforcement agencies worldwide to identify and detain wanted fugitives. As India’s designated NCB for INTERPOL, the CBI manages international police cooperation through the BHARATPOL network, enabling seamless coordination with domestic and global law enforcement bodies.
Over the past few years, the CBI has played a critical role in bringing back more than 150 fugitives to India through international cooperation mechanisms, reinforcing the country’s crackdown on absconding criminals operating across borders.
