Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a series of programs on campus today to mark the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The celebrations included a Fit India Freedom Run, film festival, plantation drive, lectures, and digital competitions, reflecting Gandhi’s message of simplicity, service, and sustainability.
The day began with a flag-hoisting ceremony and the Fit India Freedom Run, launched by University Registrar A.P. Siddiqui. The event was attended by Chief Proctor Professor Wasim A. Khan, Professor Mehtab Alam Khan (DSW), faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students. The run, which passed through various parts of the university campus, culminated at the Mujeeb Bagh Community Centre, where the Registrar addressed the participants.
An online lecture was delivered by Mr. Wimal Bhai, Convener of the National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM), on the topic “Gandhi’s Relevance in Contemporary India.” Students and staff joined the session via Zoom. A digital poster-making competition was also organized as part of the celebration, with participants submitting their entries online.
The events were a joint initiative of the Office of the DSW, NSS, and NCC units of the university. Over the past month, JMI has also organized three international webinars on Gandhian ideas and philosophy in collaboration with Oxford University (UK), Seoul National University (South Korea), and California State University, Sacramento (USA), reinforcing Gandhi’s global relevance.
