The Department of Social Work, Fieldwork Unit, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), organised its Supervisory Meet on September 26, 2025, with the aim of fostering meaningful connections between students, faculty and social sector organisations/NGOs. The event provided an invaluable opportunity to interact with NGO/agency representatives, gain career insights and engage with emerging trends in the field of Social Work and Social Sector. The meeting brought together over 57 participants from more than 35 NGO representatives from Delhi and NCR.
Dr. Rubina Nusrat (Co-Director, Fieldwork) sets the stage for the supervisory meet by connecting with the participants and representatives of organisations. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Ravindra Ramesh Patil, Head Department of Social Work, who formally welcomed Guest of Honour, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Mohd. Muslim Khan, NGO representatives and the faculty members of the department. He provided the background of the supervisory meet and highlighted the department’s mission of preparing socially responsible and ethically grounded professional social workers. Through a photographic highlight, he reflected on the department’s achievements and engagements with the partner NGOs during the past years and extended gratitude to agencies for their consistent role in mentoring students.
Prof. Mohd. Muslim Khan highlighted the significance of agency partnerships in shaping the academic and professional journey of students and briefed about the journey of Jamia Millia Islamia. Prof. Virendra Balaji Shahare, Director, Field Work and Placement, presented the overview of Field Work, Vision, Mission and Objectives. He highlighted the detailed framework of Field Work, of M.A (S.W), HRM, ADPH and B.A (Hons) Social Work. He further emphasised the importance of robust partnerships with agencies to ensure students’ hands-on learning and career development.
The formal introduction was given by all the participants of the supervisory meet. A key highlight of the meet was the Open House on “Paradigm Shift from Charity to Right based approach,” moderated by Prof. Ushvinder Kaur Popli. Agency representatives shared their perspectives on strengthening fieldwork, required critical skills for Social Work professionals and strategies for adapting to dynamic social sector needs. The NGOs representative, Madhvi Kotwal Samson (ABHAS), Ms. Disha (Kailash Sathiyarthi), and Ms. Aruna (HAQ) underlined educational and learning maximisation, mental health and shadow counselling, the growing demand for expertise in behavioural change communication, project management in social development. Other representatives, including Dr. Sanjay (Ashriya Adhikar Abhiyan), Kusum Farooqui (TCTF), Ranu Kalra, K.P Singh (Nav Shrishti), Masum Akhtar (Hope Project), Rakesh Sarkar (Jamghat), and Renu (CASP) spoke about the importance of orientation before placement of interns, proper planning and contribution of interns towards organisation, providing opportunities to involve in the community, among other things.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Lalhmingmawii Gangte, Co-Director Field Work and Placement, who acknowledged the contributions of faculty members, students, agency partners, support staff and the Dean for making the event successful. A high tea and networking session allowed participants to engage in one-on-one discussions, exchange ideas, and strengthen professional bonds. A token of appreciation in the form of saplings was given to the agency representatives at the end of the event.
The Supervisory Meet reaffirmed the department’s commitment to bridging academia and practice to promote democratic praxis. By bringing together students, faculty members, and agencies on a single platform, it sought to enhance learning and build networks that will support the next generation of social work professionals in navigating their careers with competence, adaptability, and a spirit of service.
